trimmings & trappings

I think everyone would agree that moving at Christmastime is something you try to avoid at all costs.  Unfortunately sometimes it can't be avoided.  It's hard to feel festive when your walls are bare and there are boxes everywhere.  We did manage to put up our Christmas tree, Santa needs somewhere to bring presents don't ya know ;)  We are doing our best to get into the spirit despite the fact that our home is becoming increasingly barren.

There is something to be said for preparing your home and making it a joyous reflection of the season.  Giving your children the wonder of Christmas magic, the sparkly lights, the heartwarming smells, showing them the significance that something really big is about to happen...celebrating Christ our Savior's birth.  Showing His love through so many ways.

So while there's not much festive decorating, cookie baking, twinkly light hanging, etc going on for us this year, I've decided to live vicariously through these beautiful images from my Holiday Cheer Pinterest board.  Follow me on Pinterest here!

Let's get to it shall we?

5 ways to give

Thanksgiving and Christmas pretty much go hand-in-hand dont'cha think?
Sure they share a close relationship on the calendar, but more importantly they're linked in meaning.  Its only natural that gratitude for our blessings leads to wanting to share those blessings with those less fortunate...
love on our neighbors as Jesus loves on us.

There's this little thing called Operation Christmas Child, ever heard of it?  ;)

A child can receive their first Christmas gift EVER through this wonderful organization.  All you have to do is fill up a shoebox of goodies (which can include school supplies and hygiene items as well as toys) and drop it off at the nearest Drop-off location.  They have them all around the country and there is bound to be one near you.  I found one within 2 miles of my house!  Just imagine the love and joy these children feel as they receive some of these basic necessities. The very ones that we take for granted every day.

I've been wanting to participate for 2 years now but admittedly I would always forgot to check the calendar to see when the deadline was, and then it was too late to participate.
This year I finally got to the party on time ;)

We packed up our box of goodies.
L wrote the sweetest little note to our recipient and E helped decorate it afterwards.
All wrapped up and ready to deliver joy and love!

It felt so good to do this.
So so good.
Such a simple thing to us that can mean the world to someone else.

I did a little digging and found some more great ways to give a little this holiday season.
Give big, give small, God sees it all.
Won't you join me in spreading the love?

{1}
A truly unique way to give a meaningful gift.
You can give gifts like a goat, clean water, a new mother and baby kit, a wheelchair, chickens, school supplies, soccer balls, or medication to those that are in the most need.
Gifts can begin at less than $25 so it makes it super easy to change a life.

*Start by browsing gifts by category. Choose a gift to donate in honor of someone special.
*Select a FREE card! You can choose to have a card mailed to you, send an e-card, or download a beautiful card to print.
*Your gift will bring urgent help and lasting hope for a child in need.

{2}
Samaritan's Purse - Children's Heart Project
CHP works with top-quality hospitals to provide surgery for children who live in countries where the required medical expertise and equipment are not available. Samaritan's Purse arranges airfare for the children, a parent, and a translator. You can make a donation towards providing that much needed airfare and other travel expenses so that these special families can receive the gift of medical healing.  I know it's all to easy for me to imagine my littles desperately needing surgery and what it must feel like to know the help is out there but not be able to get to it.  Please consider donating to this life giving cause.

{3}
Charity Water
A non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries.
100% of all public donations directly fund water projects.
Clean water.
It sounds so simple but there are so many that go without.

{4}
Give a date night
Know a couple with kids?  Offer to keep the kids for a few hours so
the couple can spend some quality time together and refresh their marriage.
Even if its just going for a cup of coffee.
As a parent I can tell you how hard it can be to squeeze in a date night, but they are SO needed.  A chance to re-connect and give your spouse your undivided attention can do wonders!  Having time away yet knowing your children are being loved on would be such a blessing.

{5}
Nursing Home Love
How about spreading some love to the elderly?  Those in nursing homes are so appreciative of your time and efforts as many of them don't have any family or friends left.  Consider visiting and spending some time with the residents.  Maybe share a talent like singing, or playing an instrument.  Other ways to bring them joy would be to take your pet if it is allowed (animals always bring happiness), bake them cookies, make them special handmade Christmas cards or decorations.  Your presence and time mean so much more than you know.  This is a great one to get the kids involved in too!

How will you be giving a little this Christmas?

Woodland Christmas

I'm ALL about Christmas right now (that may be "Let it Snow" playing in the background right now :) and truth be told I'm starting to panic that I don't have any gifts bought yet.
I truly hate to shop in December.  I'm not a crowds person and strive to get all my shopping done in November so I can sail on through December with nothing but fun and Christmas cheer :)

We are THOSE people that like to decorate early.  We usually don't host Thanksgiving and we like having our Christmas decorations up for a good while so we get right to it!  We were blessed to have warm weather this past weekend and got our lights up outside.  I usually make Hubsy wait until we see at least one other house in the neighborhood with their lights on before we turn ours on though.

I mentioned before that this year I want to re-vamp my Christmas decor.  I have collected a lot of decorations through the years,  many just from family members that didn't want them anymore, so really I have a mish-mosh of stuff.  Nothing wrong with that but I think I'd like to decorate a little more to my liking.

Enter the Woodland Christmas theme.
Being the outdoor enthusiast that I am I simply fell in love with the idea of somewhat traditional
looking decor with tons of outdoor elements thrown in.
Think tons of pine cones, wood, berries, and greens.
These are some of my inspirations that I have come across.  I am in love.

I'm a HUGE fan of birch so this centerpiece is right up my alley.
{2} Pottery Barn
Again with the birch ;)
I'll be branch hunting when I go to my Dad and stepmother's for Thanksgiving.
I've already informed Hubsy he'll be cutting up some wood for me.

These are so simple and I already have some white frames I bought at IKEA several months ago.

{4}via Pinterest
I'd love to do an outdoor version for my porch area, so simple and beautiful.

This would be for the porch area too, and I already have tomato cages to use, perfect!

{6}Pottery Barn
Can we just agree that Pottery Barn has the most gorgeous stuff?!  Their Xmas line is the center of my inspiration!  I adore these sweet nests filled with ornaments and presents.  I have some extremely fragile and extremely beautiful ornaments from my Godmother that I don't put on my tree for fear the rugrats will get them.  This idea is gorgeous....and safe.

Too easy and too cute.  I'll be adding pine cones to my "branch hunt" on Thanksgiving.

{8}Pottery Barn
Love this but making it a DIY, hope I can find some little birdies at the dollar store that
I can spray paint a metallic silver or gold.
{9}via Pinterest
 This is such a lovely alternative to a traditional wreath.
{10}Pottery Barn
Another easy DIY inspired by Pottery Barn.  You can just use any old jar in your cupboard, fill with some fresh greens and a candle and voila!  Instant woodland ambiance.

Do you decorate with a theme in mind?
Or am I just weird?
